Three good press wins!

June 26, 2015 By Mary T. Wagner Leave a Comment

Sharing the good news that in the National Federation of Press Women‘s 2015 communications contest, I picked up a first place, a second place, and an Honorable Mention finish in three categories! The only way you even get to compete in the national contest is for your entries to come in first at the local level, which in my case was in the Illinois Woman’s Press Association.

Taking FIRST PLACE in the “photographer-writer” category is an essay I wrote called “Elegy for a Barn” on my signature blog, “Running with Stilettos.” I have been stopping to take pictures of this old barn on a country road on my way to and from work for the past couple of years now. I was captivated by its stoic beauty and strength in the face of weather and gravity. And then as a formal deconstruction project commenced, with those weathered, silver barn boards harvested for re-use, it still remained standing improbably far, far longer than I could have anticipated. And so this essay was my tribute to a vanishing place I called “my Brigadoon.” Just a couple of week ago I drove past it again, happily expecting as I crested the hill, to see the roof line against the trees, only to find that what wind and weather had failed to accomplish, man had finally done and the only thing left standing forlornly was the silo.

Brigadoon has fallen

Then, taking SECOND PLACE in the “Web or Social Media” category of “blogs–corporate or for-profit,” is my very own Growing Bolder Blog!!! I have been so happy to have a connection with Growing Bolder for several years now as we’ve both grown and tried new things and directions, and this recognition is absolutely just icing on the cake!!

And then last but not least, my book “When the Shoe Fits…Essays of Love, Life and Second Chances” drew an HONORABLE MENTION in the NFPW’s book category of “creative non-fiction.” This is my “best of” essay collection in which I cherry-picked my favorite (and reader favorite) essays from my first three books, on topics as diverse as power tools, love, chocolate, the view from the back seat of a Harley, death, law and, of course, shoes!

When the Shoe Fits

I have to say, it’s not even July yet, and it’s been a VERY good year!

GB blog wins press award in Illinois!

April 10, 2015 By Mary T. Wagner 3 Comments

I’m both thrilled and happy to announce that my blog here at Growing Bolder has just won a first-place award in the annual communications contest of the Illinois Woman’s Press Association. This yearly professional and student communications contest is a very big deal in Illinois, and the first-place winners all go on to be judged at the national level by the National Federation of Press Women. Woo hoo!!!

While I live in Wisconsin, I grew up in Chicago and have been a member of the IWPA since 2008. Founded in 1885, the organization is an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women…even though it is about fifty years older than the national group. In fact, the IWPA is the oldest affiliate in the nation! The purpose of IWPA is “to maintain and improve the standards of members in mass communications in Illinois, to promote their interest, and to provide for the sharing of ideas and information.” And a more encouraging and giving group of press women I have certainly never met!

For the “blogging for corporate or for-profit” part of the competition, I submitted two Growing Bolder posts I had written last year: “Home…and where the heart is,” and “carpe diem photography.” Here are some of the very kind things that the judge had to say:

Both of these posts are really beautifully done. “Home… and where the heart is” suggests a relentless humor and ability to adapt, which I think encapsulates the idea of “growing bolder.” “Carpe diem photography,” too, suggests that same adaptability: To learn to appreciate novelties instead of taking them for granted so that we can surround ourselves with beauty.

So now I get to wait until June, to see whether my Growing Bolder posts will possibly place at the national level! In the meantime, I’d like to share that I actually took home three more first-place awards in this year’s contest! One is for an essay I wrote on my Running with Stilettos blog about an old barn I drive past often on the way to work, “Elegy for a Barn.”

Still Standing

Another is for a photo essay I posted on my author website about making an accidental discovery of an abandoned farm when I made an unexpected turn, “End of the Road.”

End of the Road

And the third is for my essay collection, “When the Shoe Fits…Essays of Love, Life and Second Chances.”

I will be on pins and needles until then. But right now, I just want to say how happy and thankful I am to Growing Bolder for inviting me to be part of this marvelous blogging team! Onward!!

About Mary

About Mary

Mary T. Wagner is a former newspaper and magazine journalist who changed careers at forty by going to law school and becoming a criminal prosecutor. However, she never could step away from the written word entirely, and inevitably the joy of writing drew her back to the keyboard.

A Chicago native, this mother of four and recent new grandmother now lives in rural Wisconsin, where she draws much inspiration for writing from daily walks in the countryside with her dog, Lucky, and the cat who thinks he's a dog...The Meatball. Wagner's ongoing legal experience has ranged from handling speeding tickets to arguing and winning several cases before the Wisconsin Supreme Court...sometimes in the same week!

Her first three essay collections--Running with Stilettos, Heck on Heels, and Fabulous in Flats--have garnered numerous national and regional awards, including a Gold E-Lit Book Award, an Indie Excellence Award, and "Published Book of the Year" by the Florida Writers Association. Now her latest book, "When the Shoe Fits...Essays of Love, Life and Second Chances" rounds up her favorites--and reader favorites--into a "best of" collection now available on Amazon in paperback and ebook formats.
